Look great while keeping the skin healthy

Look great while keeping the skin healthy

Women and men have been wearing cosmetics for centuries. It helps in enhancing beauty and boosts a person’s confidence. Makeup has certainly gone through a big change over time not just in terms of trends and style but also in its formula and inclusiveness.

We live in a time when innovation is more rapid than it has ever been. New product concepts, formulas, textures, and colors are all contributing to the styles and trends that keep the market alive.

Cosmetics have always played an important role in civilization's daily lives, even in ancient times. It could be a reflection of their holiness, social class, or beauty standards. However, the majority of the cosmetics they use include high levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, and other harmful substances that endanger their health. Thankfully, we’re far from the days of using toxic mixtures to enhance our beauty. Today, The multibillion-dollar cosmetic industry must meet the government regulations about what it can and cannot include in products and must follow safe manufacturing guidelines.

When a cosmetic is applied to the skin, it can penetrate the body and join in the bloodstream. It might also be inhaled or ingested. That’s why people are concerned about what they put on their skin. Conscious consumerism led to the start and rise of Clean Beauty.

Clean Beauty refers to products that are clean of harmful ingredients. They favor natural ingredients but still use synthetic ingredients that are considered safe for the consumer’s health and the environment.

Beauty brands use the term “clean” to indicate that the products do not have ingredients (natural or synthetic) that they consider ‘controversial’ or ‘unsafe’. Here are some of the ingredients that  the ‘clean beauty’ are concerned about and are avoiding:

Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. Butyl- propyl- and ethyl - parabens have been linked to hormone disruption. According to FDA regulations, parabens in current form are officially considered safe to use since only a very small concentration (up to 0.4 percent, though it may differ for each paraben) of these ingredients are used. However, it may be irritating to some with sensitive skin.  Fragrances are often an ‘umbrella term’ for hundreds of ingredients that are not required to disclose including Phthalates. With that, it is hard to know what you are applying to the skin. People with chronic inflammatory skin conditions where there is a problem with the skin barrier are susceptible to having problems with fragrance.
Phthalates are a group of chemicals most commonly used to make plastic more flexible and harder to break. They also act as a binding agent or a solvent. The most frequently used phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products are diethyl phthalate (DEP) as a solubilizer in perfumes and understandably, as a denaturant in alcohol (because it renders certain alcohol products unfit for oral consumption). Other derivatives include dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP); you will often find these ingredients in nail polish since they make the polish flexible and chip resistant. Consumers should know that the dibutyl phthalate organic compound was banned in some countries and as such, most manufacturers have discontinued using it. Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is no longer used at all to manufacture cosmetics and personal care items, including nail products. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): They are surfactants that can strip down the skin’s natural oil which leads to dryness, itchiness, and redness. In some cases, it can trigger eczema, dermatitis, and acne.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEGs): Propylene glycol (PG) and Butylene glycol (BG) are chemical thickeners that can be found in cream-based products. It could potentially be a petroleum-derived ingredient that is irritating to the skin. Talc is a naturally occurring mineral, mined from the earth, and composed of magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Talcum powder is often used as a smoothing agent in mineral makeup. It is generally safe however, it has the potential to be contaminated with asbestos which is a carcinogen when inhaled.

Natural and Organic Makeup

Natural makeup contains ingredients that are from natural resources while Organic makeup contains ingredients that are grown on organic farms. It is easier to read the labels of organic makeup and to know what you are putting on your skin exactly since it uses naturally sourced chemically unaltered ingredients.

These two are not interchangeable terms. Natural ingredients mean non-synthetically derived chemicals, and they can come from plants that are not grown organically. It is also important to note that natural and organic products are not necessarily safe. They can also be harsh and abrasive on the skin which can trigger irritation that is why it is essential to read the label and do a patch test before using the product.

Mineral Makeup

This is made of materials extracted from Earth and its main ingredients are minerals such as iron and zinc oxides. It is great since titanium and zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties that can have a calming effect on the skin. Zinc oxide is also anti-microbial which makes it beneficial for people with acne. This is also non-comedogenic as long as it doesn’t contain any talc. However, some mineral makeup contains Bismuth oxychloride which can be irritating for those who have sensitive skin so check the list of ingredients first before purchasing.

Here are some of our brands that offer mineral makeup:

There is an overload of buzzwords on product packaging and in marketing when it comes to clean beauty. If the product has the following on its label, it implies that:

  • Natural or All Natural:  It is made with ingredients sourced from nature. It could be from plant or animal minerals that are minimally modified.
  • Organic: The ingredients and formula are produced without harmful ingredients. products containing ingredients of vegetable origin but are grown biologically and without using synthetic elements or GMOs.
  • Naturally Derived: Natural ingredients have undergone some chemical processing.
  • Vegan: The product does not contain animal-derived ingredients. (e.g, beeswax, animal fats, etc.)
  • Cruelty-Free: An indication that no animal testing has been done on the products or ingredients.
  • Fragrance-free: Refers to the lack of chemicals that are added to enhance aroma or mask an odor.
  • Unscented: The product lacks scent, however, there may be masking fragrances to remove the odor.

Everyone has a great makeup tip or experience to share. And most of this so-called advice ends up doing more harm than good. So here are some misconceptions that we need to get out of our head..

Wearing makeup everyday causes breakouts

Some can cause breakout if your skin is sensitive to a particular ingredient, but this is not common. Not removing your makeup properly causes breakouts. When you sleep with makeup on it can lead to pore-clogging buildup that encourages the bacteria to develop. That is why it is recommended to double cleanse at night using a makeup remover followed by your night routine starting with your facial cleanser.

A non-stinging formula that removes all traces of makeup as it preps skin for cleansing.

How to Use:
Apply with a damp cotton pad. Wipe downward on closed eyelids. Rinse off. May be used over the entire face to remove makeup before cleansing.
A double-effect wash gel that deeply removes the facial makeup and impurities. It contains natural mild enzyme extracts, which cleanse the skin and simultaneously generate cohesion effects, accelerating the metabolism of the old dead skin cells on the outer layer.

How to Use:

Makeup Remover: Use dry hands to take an appropriate amount of gel, massage the face with it   and then rinse with warm water

Cleanser: Wet your face with water, take an appropriate amount of gel and massage the face with it, then rinse with warm water.

It is also recommended to exfoliate once or twice a week to deep cleanse your skin to remove dirt and debris deep within your pores that your cleanser may have missed.

This weekly treatment scrub helps eliminate cellular buildup and bacteria, smoothing texture, reducing inflammation, and the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation through a combination of granular exfoliations and acids. Ideal for all acne skin and can be used as a treatment mask for those with pustules or drier acne skin.

How to Use:
Squeeze a small amount into damp hands; work into face and neck. Allow polish to sit on the skin for 2-3 minutes. Add water and begin to rinse thoroughly with warm water. Pat skin dry and brush away any excess beads. It May be used 2 times a week depending on skin type.
Promises gentle renewal of the skin surface based on pineapple, grape, and passiflora extracts. These fruit extracts contain natural alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and lactic acid. The skin does not dry out, the pores open up, oily clogs are dissolved, and dead skin cells are removed from the surface. Even after the first application, fine lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced. The skin looks firmed and even.

How to Use:
Apply daily in the evening* after cleansing and toning the face, leaving out the eye area, and leave on for two to three minutes. Then rinse off with lukewarm water. Avoid contact with the eyes! Do not expose the skin to direct sunlight after use.

People with oily skin don't need moisturizer

People tend to believe that moisturizer makes your face more oily which is why it is not recommended to be applied before makeup as it can slip and the look can get cakey. Oily skin needs just as much hydration as other skin types. Once the skin is stripped of its natural moisture caused by a product, it will cover it by producing more oil. Use a moisturizer that is made specifically for oily skin that is also makeup friendly.

An extremely light emulsion that hydrates the skin, while leaving it lastingly shine-free.  Ideal for people who have combination to oily skin.

All-natural products are the safest

The advantages of using natural and organic products are numerous, but a minimal risk of discomfort is not one of them. Essential oils are frequently utilized in natural products that provide good effects, but they can cause a reaction in people with sensitive skin. Before employing a new product, it is recommended that you perform a patch test.

People with dry skin should not use powder

Powders are used to fix liquid and cream makeup so it doesn't migrate into lines or slide down your face. There's no excuse for skipping powder as long as you properly prepare your skin and keep it hydrated.

This rich but lightweight dual-action moisturizer uses beetroot and coconut extract to pull hydration into the skin, while ceramides, vitamin F, and pomegranate sterols strengthen the skin's natural moisture barrier, sealing in moisture. Skin is left glowing, smooth, and deeply hydrated.

DO’s and DON’Ts

Buy the right product - Every skin type is different. You cannot just purchase an item just because you saw it from someone or your favorite artist. Know your skin type and buy products that suit your skin. Do your research and check the labels to know if there is an ingredient that you are allergic to. And if you are unsure, you can always do a patch test using a tester.

Apply sunscreen - It is important to apply sunscreen before you put on makeup because sun damage can cause early signs of aging. If you are not comfortable with sunscreen, opt for a moisturizer or foundation that provides SPF.

Clean your sponges and brushes

Do not forget to clean up your sponges and brushes. Wash it at least once a week. Harmful bacteria from dead skin cells and sweat could thrive on your makeup brushes and deep cleaning can kill the bacteria.

Squeeze away excess water with a towel, set out to dry completely in a clean, well-ventilated area, and re-use.

Don’t share your makeup
Sharing your makeup items with others can spread bacteria.
Don’t add water to mascara if it is already clumped.
Adding water may introduce bacteria and will dilute the preservative which is intended to protect against microbial growth.
Don’t keep your eye makeup if you get an eye infection
Throw it away as it is more likely contaminated.
Don’t forget to thoroughly remove your makeup, especially on the eye area
Remove all the eye makeup at night before sleeping, especially mascara. If it is not removed properly it can irritate. Use a product dedicated to the eyes to gently and easily remove the makeup. If you use a waterproof product, opt for a waterproof makeup remover.
