Dry Skin in Winter

Dry Skin in Winter

Posted By Edge

With the change of seasons, we notice our skin sending some alerts such as itchy red patches, skin feeling dry and tight, and sometimes cracked skin. We all have unique skin types that respond differently.

The cold weather is certain but who says dry winter skin isn't inevitable?

The water content of the epidermis --the outermost layer of the skin-- reflects the degree of humidity around it in the winter since humidity levels are low both outside and inside. This results in roughness, flaking, itching, and cracking not only on the face but also on hands, feet, and other areas.

How to prevent and treat your skin so you can get back to GLOWING?

1. Adjusting your skincare regimens.

It is important that our skins moisture barrier is healthy in order for the treatments to respond well. Include more protective moisturizer and use overnight treatments that can help revitalize and prevent dry skin.

2. Skip long, hot showers and baths.

Hot water can strip the natural oils of the skin and can cause damage to your skin. Keep the water temperature closer to lukewarm instead when in the bath or in a shower.

3. Use a humidifier

In winter, humidity is very low, which means that the air carries very little moisture. Even the heat indoors, which adds warmth, cannot increase the amount of moisture in the air. A Humidifier, introduces moisture back into the air, helping rehydrate the outer layer of skin.

4. Moisturize After Washing.

The natural oil of our skin is being stripped off every after wash. That's why we need to replace them using moisturizers.

5. Add Occlusives to your skincare routine.

If using moisturizing treatments is not enough to heal your dry skin, you could incorporate occlusive ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, rosehip oil, and jojoba oil, to keep moisture from escaping the skin.

6. Apply Sunscreen.

It may be tempting to not use sunscreen during winter since there is less sunlight than usual. But the harmful UV light is still there. It still causes stress to the moisture barrier of the skin which affects the skins health and hydration.
