Spring Clean Your Cosmetics!

Spring Clean Your Cosmetics!

Posted By Kate

It's that time of the year again: your annual tidy-up, to freshen your home and surroundings for the new season!

During winter's cold and flu season, most of us took extra care to wash or sanitize our hands frequently. No one wants to receive "the gift that keeps on giving". However, despite all of the precautions we may take to prevent the spread of viruses, many women fail to realize that some of the products which help them look and feel their best/most beautiful ... may actually be teeming with all kinds of ugly bacteria, which may lead to illness, infections, acne, or skin irritation!

Spring cleaning should ALSO include your cosmetic stash!

Look no further than your makeup bags, purses, or vanity drawers, ladies, because your products are likely contaminated with some of the common bacteria found on cosmetic products:

  • Staphylococcus Aureus is a group of bacteria that can cause a multitude of diseases, because of infection of various tissues of the body. Staphylococcus is more familiarly known as Staph (pronounced "staff").  Nothing says "chic" or "au courant" like a stye on one's eyelid! Conjunctivitis (a.k.a. "pink eye") is never in-vogue either!
  • Pseudomonas Aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterium that lives in soil, water, and even in environments like hot tubs and on cosmetic items. Sounds utterly delicious, doesn't it?
  • Escherichia coli (commonly abbreviated E. coli) is the name of a germ or bacterium, that lives in the digestive tracts of humans and animals. Ewwwww!

Just think of what delightful creepy-crawlies are looking to make your acquaintance at the local cosmetic counter! MMM!

Q: If I'm the only one using my makeup, how can it become contaminated?
A: Fingers which have come in contact with an unclean or infected surface may contaminate your makeup, particularly if you use your fingers during application. Sneezing or coughing, air-borne contaminants, natural oils on the skin, and emollients in skincare products can all degrade, and contaminate your makeup!

Before you cower in fear, and ditch your entire cosmetics collection, know that all hope is not lost! BeautySoClean to the rescue!

Q: Why can't I use pure alcohol to disinfect my makeup?
A: Pure alcohol can dry out powder or cream cosmetics, and may actually alter the pigment in lipsticks. BeautySoClean has been specially formulated with the perfect balance of alcohol and emollients. So, not only will it never dry out or degrade your products, it actually will not alter the pigments! If you washed your hands with pure alcohol instead of using a hand sanitizer, your hands would become extremely dry and chapped ... as alcohol is not designed to protect or nourish, but BeautySoClean sanitizers are formulated to do both, so they will not ruin your makeup!

Just a quick spritz of the Cosmetic Sanitizer Mist into your powder-based blushes, eye shadows, pressed powders, brow products, and bronzers will eliminate the bacteria within 10 seconds, INSTANTLY, without compromising the integrity of the cosmetics!

For cream-based products, eyeliners, lipsticks, and even ... mascara (yes, mascara!), one of the Cosmetic Sanitizer Wipes will protect you from possible infections, while preserving the consistency and formulation of the products! (Remember to wipe the mascara wand with a Sanitizer Wipe BEFORE returning the brush to the tube! No double-dipping!)

Q: If I clean my brushes, why do I have to worry about cleaning my makeup?

A: Your brushes may be impeccably clean, but your products may be contaminated. This means that when you dip or sweep your brushes into or across the product, those contaminants then go into the brush, and can be spread across the face, or on the lips or eyes.

Speaking of brushes: when was the last time you washed yours? Maintaining the condition of the tools which touch your face is important: clean brushes facilitate better blending, and and reduce the risk of transferring germs or bacteria to your face!

Many brush cleansing sprays on the market:

  • contain harsh chemical solvents such as Trichloroethane; the chemical is also found in household products such as spot cleaners, glues, and aerosol sprays. (Bad for you, your skin, and the bristles of your brushes!)
  • require rinsing, or take longer than necessary to dry.

BeautySoClean Conditioning Brush Cleanser dries within seconds, is gentle and safe for you and your brushes (natural and synthetic). No turpentine or dry-cleaning fluid on your skin, or left lingering on the bristles of your brushes! Handy: all products come in portable sizes, fitting perfectly into a purse, or makeup bag. Before borrowing a friend's products ("Hey, that was a great shade of lipstick! Thanks for letting me borrow it the other night. I simply love the cold sore which has since erupted, and so does my boyfriend!"), or daring to apply products directly from testers in stores (gah!), spritz or wipe the products and brushes with BeautySoClean before use.

Also quick-cleansing, extremely gentle, and easy on brush hair: Éminence Organic Natural Brush Cleanser, Youngblood Pro Brush Cleaner, and Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Quick Change Brush Cleaner Spray

Your health will thank you for keeping your beauty arsenal clean!
