Style Is Eternal ...

Posted By Kate

With wedding, graduation, and prom season now upon us, millions of women are seeking the perfect products to help them look their most beautiful on such poignant occasions!

In ideal world, we would have a fairy godmother whom, with a wave of her magic wand, could instantly transform us into flawless, picture-perfect princesses like the late Grace Kelly of Monaco.

Alas, some thought and preparation is required to look one's best!

Below are a few hair and makeup tips to help ensure that your special day is less stressful, and you feel your most confident and beautiful in front of the camera.

Trends Come And Go, But Classic Style Endures!

One merely has to look at old wedding or prom photos to guesstimate the era in which the images were captured!

Case in point: western brides during the 1970s often wore a Gibson girl or loose, roller-set hair, usually with a Juliette-style bridal cap fastened to the back of their head, or the (dreadful!) floppy, garden-style hat in lieu of a cap & veil. The 1980s backside bustle bows were thanks to the Emanuels — designers of the bridal gown worn by the late Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales — all about frothy skirts, intricate beadwork on the bodice, poofy sleeves, and excessive headpieces, paired with billowing veils.

RE: prom

It doesn't take a genius to realize that this bea-yoooootiful prom photo below crawled its way out of a Whitesnake video/Jessica McClintock advertisement ... err prom, circa 1988-1989!

Thats a whole lotta hairspray! (let's hope that there were no pyrotechnics during that prom!)

The point: not only may trendy fashions date you, but one's choice in hairstyle and makeup could also place you in a timewarp 10+ years from now, when you look at photos, reflecting upon your youth (and, sometimes, questionable eyebrows, too!).

Choose carefully!

Along The Same Thread

Now is NOT the time to introduce drastic, dramatic changes to your makeup! Given the amount of focus on Pantone's annual Colour of The Year, one would have to be blind or living under a bridge to not have noticed the au courant shade for this year: Radiant Orchid.

However, just because it's trending in cosmetic markets, doesn't imply that trendy shades ought to be implemented into one's makeup for prom or wedding day.

*shaking head*

Unless you are artsy, and known to regularly push the envelope, always changing your look seasonally, and as trends come and go, the general rule of thumb is to look like YOU, but more polished.

In other words: it's best not to wear a shocking shade of Radiant Orchid lipstick on your wedding day, or any other sort of cosmetic which distracts from your beauty both in pictures and in-person. One may incorporate pops of colour in other ways (i.e. flowers or accessories), but for the most part, women whom dare to subscribe to trends outside of their normal look tend to regret it later.

Do a test run with a seasoned makeup artist or esthetician. If you're not comfortable with the finished product during the test run, you'll have time to communicate, and come to a mutual understanding of the look you wish to wear on your special day.

Less is truly is more. You want people to see YOU, not your makeup.

Your test runs and makeup/hair trials should also include:

  • test photos (intensity of makeup, appropriate foundation, no flash bounce-back/strobing effect);

  • false eyelashes (if you intend to wear them); ensure that you're comfortable with their weight, length, and otherwise;

  • your headpiece & veil; wear it around for a bit, to determine if your scalp, shoulders, and neck are comfortable — the small amount of weight, as well as tension from hairstyles can affect comfort, so it's best to determine your comfort level well in advance!

Keep It Fresh, Light, and Clean!

Excessive makeup and severe hairstyles may not only date you in photos, but they also have the potential to add years to one's appearance if too heavy-handed. While a younger, prom-aged or early-20s woman may not mind adding a few years to her appearance, it is important for maturing, grown women to recognize that beautiful skin and a softer look is more flattering, youthful, and photo friendly.

Invest your money into your SKINCARE and foundation, for if your skin doesn't look good, or one is wearing an unflattering foundation formulation (or shade!), both will be detected in photos and in person. A skincare treatment and course of action is best determined by your skincare professional, many weeks in advance, to prepare it for your special day. Please consider that changing seasons and stress levels can influence skin's appearance, hydration, as well as tone (re: foundation shade). Skincare and foundation are two areas in which is truly best to seek professional guidance. Best not to cut corners, or try something new within a couple of weeks of your special day!

Two Great Suggestions:
EVE LOM Daily Collection Kit: the perfect pampering set includes EVE LOM's famous, luxurious Cleanser, Morning Time Cleanser, Rescue Mask, Kiss Mix, and a muslin cloth.

FACE atelier Ultra Foundation: the ULTIMATE foundation for any bride or woman who demands flawlessness and PERFORMANCE from her makeup! (FACE atelier has recently paired with famous Kleinfeld's in their Toronto bridal boutique!)

Consider Your Environment!

If you're heading to prom, you're guaranteed to be dancing, having fun, and possibly working up a sweat. If you're a bride, member of the bridal party, or Mother of the bride/groom, the joyous occasion of a wedding can (and usually does!) include a bit of stress, tears, many photos, dancing, and speeches, requiring a bit of TLC or reinforcements throughout the day. Products that will help your look stay fresh, while having fun, enjoying your special day!

Makeup Primers

The purpose of a primer is to smooth, perfect, fill, prepare, and help makeup adhere and endure after application. While there are a lot of great primers on the market, it is important to consider the type of skin one has (oily/combination; dry/mature; sensitive), as well as the formulation. Some of our favourites include Colorescience Skin Mattifying Face Primer , Whip Hand Cosmetiques Set The Stage Primer, Skindinavia Primer Sprays, and AmazingCosmetics Anti-Aging Primer . Also to consider: eyelid primers such as that from bareMinerals or Jane Iredale.

Setting Products

A quick mist of a cosmetics setting spray will help prevent makeup meltdown throughout the day and evening. Model in a Bottle is great for most skin types, and if one seeks a dewier finish, FACE atelier's hydrating Face Finish  ensures that makeup will go the distance for someone who is concerned about dehydration, dryness, or mature skin. Makeup artists swear by Skindinavia's Finishing Sprays, available in three specific formulas, including Bridal.

Touch Up Powder or Blotting Papers

Along with lipstick or lipgloss for touch-ups, it is important to keep a compact of powder or package of blotting papers in one's clutch. When oil or sweat breakthrough, their halation may be captured in photos, particularly if one has an oily skin type, or experiences t-zone shine!

Tatcha Aburatorigami blotting papers from Japan are coveted by makeup artists and beauty mavens alike for a reason: they're amazing! For a candlelit glow, without over mattifying, T. LeClerc's Pressed Powder in its famous "Banane" shade; its yellow base will also help reduce skin flushed red by nerves, excitement, activity, or heat.

When blotting with powder or papers, it's important to remember to ROLL and PRESS the paper or powder puff onto areas, as to absorb excess oil/sweat, and press oil absorbing ingredients into skin. Rubbing will cause cakiness, smearing, and an uneven finish to one's makeup!

On your special day, be YOU, and allow your personal, unique beauty to SHINE THROUGH, while making beautiful memories, heading towards a bright and happy future. XO
