Makeup 101: The Base

Makeup 101: The Base

Posted By Edge
Makeup is a wonderful tool that can help us enhance and perfect our best features, helping us achieve the look we want, according to our style. The first step in looking your best is getting your base right. The base makeup is the one that comes first to cover skin imperfections and leave a smooth surface for other products. It defines your face shape, hides flaws, creates a flawless canvas, and helps build a solid foundation for everything else. And the goal is to make your skin look flawless as if you’re not wearing any makeup at all.

Ready to turn heads? Start with your base!

The first step to flawless makeup is a good base. There are a few steps in terms of doing your base that might be a bit overwhelming, especially for those who are just starting in makeup. So, if you want a flawless and long-lasting base, then we should know what products should be used based on our skin needs, and understand how they work together as layers of coverage for the face. Let's dig deeper into each kind of makeup so we can figure out which is best for our unique needs!

Face primer helps fill in fine lines, pores, and any other imperfections on your face to create a smooth, even surface for your makeup to adhere to.

It is applied after your skincare as the first step in your makeup. Primers work by creating a barrier between your skin and the makeup you apply over it. This barrier helps keep makeup looking fresh longer by keeping moisture locked in and preventing oil from seeping through to the surface of your skin (which can cause makeup to look less even).

If you've ever wondered what the difference is between a moisturizer and a primer, think of it this way: a moisturizer is designed to make your skin soft and supple, while a primer is designed to smooth out any bumps or texture so that your makeup will go on without any problems.

There are two types of face primer: silicone-based and water-based.

Silicone-based primers are great for oily skin because they help absorb oil on your face and keep it matte throughout the day.
Water-based primers have the opposite effect—they actually add moisture to your skin, so if you have dry skin, this might be better for you.

Silicone-based primers are great for oily skin because they help absorb oil on your face and keep it matte throughout the day

A product that neutralizes dark circles, redness, and other skin imperfections.

Color correctors work by absorbing light and reflecting it back at different wavelengths depending on what kind of discoloration you're trying to hide—meaning that when you put on a color-correcter, it’ll help neutralize redness or darkness so that it blends seamlessly with your natural tone!

COLOR CORRECTING CONCEALERS

Simply applying a concealer or foundation on top of a blended color corrector on your skin, makes it look like a fresh canvas.

A product that contains color and coverage. It can be used to cover up blemishes and imperfections and even skin tone. The formula of the makeup foundation can be liquid, cream, or powder, depending on your preference.

There are three different finishes of foundation: matte, dewy, and sheer. It's important to know which finish you have as it will help determine if your foundation is the right one for your skin type.

Matte is for oily skin types and those who want a clean look with little shine. To make sure that you choose the right color match for your complexion, always test it in natural light and wait a few seconds before making a decision on whether or not it suits you.
Dewy is great for dry skin types who want some luminosity without being too shiny or greasy looking on their face. This finish gives off an ethereal glow that looks healthy and fresh!
Sheer foundation finish is a makeup look that's matte, but not flat. This type of foundation is designed to give you skin that looks natural and healthy—not like you're wearing any makeup at all. To achieve the look, the formula will be thin and lightweight, but with enough pigment to even out skin tone and cover minor blemishes.

A product used to cover up blemishes, dark circles, and other imperfections.

It has a slightly higher color pigmentation than foundation because it's designed to only correct or hide areas on your face where there's a difference in tone (i.e., redness or darkness). It should be applied after foundation and before powder. Concealer should be applied in a thin layer on the spot you want to cover up so that it blends seamlessly into the rest of your makeup (and skin tone).

If you have dry skin, choose a thick formula like a creamy concealer or stick concealer. These are heavier than other types of concealers and will help keep your skin hydrated all day. They also tend to have more coverage than other types of concealers.
If you have oily skin, choose a lightweight formula like liquid or gel concealer. These products are less likely to cause breakouts since they absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin instead of clogging pores like some thicker formulas do (which can cause acne).

Used to set makeup, even out your skin tone, and cover blemishes.

The main purpose of face powder is to set your makeup, so it stays in place all day long. If you've ever had problems with your foundation or concealer melting off after a few hours, chances are that you're not using enough powder.

Powders are also great for setting your under-eye area, which helps to prevent creasing and get rid of dark circles. And if you have oily skin, adding some powder to your T-zone will help keep shine at bay for longer.

Types of Face Powders:

Loose Powder is usually made with talc or cornstarch as the base ingredient, along with a small amount of oil or wax to help keep it soft. It has a very fine texture that spreads easily over your skin without sinking into pores or lines.
Dewy is made from a blend of finely ground minerals like mica or titanium dioxide; these powders have a slightly heavier texture than loose powders do because they're pressed into sheets rather than poured out onto trays like other types of makeup products are made from scratch.

Conclusion
By reviewing everything you have learned about the different makeup products you can use for your base, you should have a clear picture of how they all work together to be a great selection for your needs. Each product is made to be stand-alone, or can also be layer underneath another in order to give yourself the desired coverage. You may even find that a certain product works best on its own rather than as a layer application. At the end of the day, everyone's skin is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to makeup applications. It's up to you to decide what works best on your skin and presents the coverage that meets your needs. It's just one extra step toward better skin!
