The Perks of Coffee in Beauty

Coffee does wonders for your skin and hair. Read on to learn more about why you should integrate coffee and caffeine into your skin care regimen.


Anti-cancer / Anti-carcinogenic
At first, scientists found evidence supporting caffeine's ability to inhibit or stop UVB-induced cancer by drinking coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages. Further research on caffeine's effects revealed that topical application, aside from ingesting it, also has the same anti-carcinogenic effect.

Although Dr. Stallings and Dr. Lupo's work (2009) mentioned that more research is needed to further solidify coffee/caffeine's anti-carcinogenic effects on humans, existing scientific evidence was strong enough to prod the industry to integrate coffee and caffeine into its cosmeceutical products. Considering its many other potential benefits on top of inhibiting cancer, it only makes sense to include coffee in our skin and hair care regimen.




Anti-hair loss
One of the studies done to test coffee's effects on hair care was done in Thailand, in the School of Cosmetic Science under Mae Fah Luang University. They experimented with a placebo group (a hairspray that did not contain coffee) and another group that used a hair spray with 10% coffee berry (CB) extract.

The spray with coffee berry extract significantly reduced hair loss than the placebo group that did not use a coffee hairspray. Thai scientists concluded that "coffee berry can be used as anti-hair loss ingredient in hair care cosmetics (Prinyarux & Saewan, 2009)."





Antioxidant / Anti-aging
Hair loss is only one of the problems that coffee can potentially address. Research also has it that coffee extracts are rich in polyphenols, a plant compound with vast health benefits (McDaniel, 2008).

Coffee was found to have 10 times more potent antioxidants than other topical antioxidants, as well as improving dyschromia, fine lines, wrinkles and the skin's overall appearance (McDaniel, 2008).
